What the name tells us
後腰, ushiro-goshi, combines rear and hip.
How the technique works
Response, lifting and lowering must remain connected and controlled, not aim for maximum height followed by release.
Ushiro-goshi responds to uke's technique, encloses the waist, lifts and brings uke down in Kodokan's definition. Include the event before the lift; it is not an isolated weightlifting exercise.
What to watch in the clips
- Watch the base before lifting.
- Follow the direction after lifting.
- Observe supporting hands through landing.
A distinction worth noticing
Utsuri Goshi transfers onto the hip; Ura Nage sacrifices backward. Do not group every rear lifting action together.
Utsuri-goshi transfers uke onto the rear hip, while ura-nage adds tori's backward sacrifice and a path over the shoulder. Not every lifting counter should be labelled ushiro-goshi or ura-nage interchangeably.
Taking the lesson back to practice
Let an instructor select partner and lifting range. Do not force a back arch or drop the partner. Stop and reset if the base is lost.
The Level here refers to the IMAC Dojo curriculum. Use the article and clips to prepare questions and review them with your instructor. Practical training needs a suitable partner, space and controlled conditions.
Follow from uke's entry and ask when tori can control and support the descent. If the clip shows lifting but not landing, information for practice is incomplete. Do not invent how to release uke.
