Short Answer
Ura Nage is a rear sacrifice combining torso control and lifting. It is not a lift followed by an uncontrolled free fall.
Key Takeaways
- Watch base and torso control before lifting.
- Follow lifting into backward descent.
- Observe the shoulder path and receiving.

What the name tells us
裏投, ura-nage, combines rear or reverse with throwing and belongs to rear sacrifices.
How the technique works
Lifting connects with sacrifice and guidance over the shoulder line. Judging only height can hide the control involved.
Ura-nage connects lifting uke's upper body with tori's backward sacrifice and a path over the shoulder in Kodokan's definition. The lift is part of the path, not a goal of maximum height. Follow the movement through supported landing.
What to watch in the clips
- Watch base and torso control before lifting.
- Follow lifting into backward descent.
- Observe the shoulder path and receiving.
A distinction worth noticing
Ushiro Goshi lifts and lowers without the same backward sacrifice; Yoko Guruma rotates sideways.
Ushiro-goshi brings uke down without that same sacrifice, while utsuri-goshi transfers onto the rear hip. The phase after lifting distinguishes these techniques better than calling all lifting counters by one name.
Taking the lesson back to practice
Do not attempt a high throw from video. An instructor must select partner and controllable progression. Never release into a fall or force a back arch after losing the base.
The Level here refers to the IMAC Dojo curriculum. Use the article and clips to prepare questions and review them with your instructor. Practical training needs a suitable partner, space and controlled conditions.
If footage appears to show only a strong back arch, rewind to proximity and torso control. Have the instructor arrange practice and receiving; do not lift and release a partner overhead to test the technique.
