Short Answer

Sode Guruma Jime uses the practitioner’s sleeve with both arms in a strangle. Identifying whose sleeve is held clarifies the clip.

Key Takeaways

  • Identify the sleeve being held.
  • Follow the relationship between both arms.
  • Observe space restored on release.

Locate the sleeve connection before following the arms in a close view.

What the name tells us

袖車絞, sode-guruma-jime, combines sleeve, wheel and strangle.

How the technique works

The sleeve connects the arm action; it is not simply pulling the partner’s clothing hard against the neck.

Sode-guruma-jime uses tori's own sleeve in Kodokan's definition. The grip can be concealed by the other arm, so inspect the setup before the hands approach the neck. Do not assume it uses uke's collar like another named strangle.

What to watch in the clips

  • Identify the sleeve being held.
  • Follow the relationship between both arms.
  • Observe space restored on release.

A distinction worth noticing

Sode also appears in Sode Tsurikomi Goshi, a hip throw. A shared sleeve reference does not imply the same principle.

Although guruma also occurs in koshi-guruma and ashi-guruma, this is shime-waza, not a throw. The shared word does not instruct a circular twist of the body or neck.

Taking the lesson back to practice

Do not strike the throat with a forearm. Have an instructor check positioning, practise slowly and release immediately on a signal. Do not test endurance.

The Level here refers to the IMAC Dojo curriculum. Use the article and clips to prepare questions and review them with your instructor. Practical training needs a suitable partner, space and controlled conditions.

Ask where the sleeve is held and how the arms relate before applying neck pressure. Check structure and prompt release rather than seeking faster pressure.
