Short Answer
Tsurikomi Goshi connects a lifting draw with hip loading. This article includes its main lesson and a related Sode Tsurikomi Goshi clip, a separately named technique whose grips need clear identification.
Key Takeaways
- Read whether the clip is the main technique or Sode.
- Follow the lifting hand action and the hip’s entry timing.
- Compare the short clip’s sleeve use with the main lesson’s grips.
The two clips do not demonstrate the same named technique throughout. Use the Sode short to compare sleeve action rather than treat it as a duplicate of the main lesson.

What the name tells us
釣込腰, tsurikomi-goshi, is a hip technique. 袖釣込腰, sode-tsurikomi-goshi, adds sleeve to the name. Kodokan lists them separately.
How the technique works
The main technique draws and lifts the forward-unbalanced partner onto the hip. Sode uses the sleeve in that lifting draw. Observe grip, torso and hip height together instead of copying hand positions across clips without distinguishing names.
Tsurikomi-goshi connects lifting-and-drawing action with bringing uke onto the rear hip. Read hands and hip as one sequence rather than lifting the arms and turning independently of uke. Mikihiro Mukai's nage-no-kata notes relate lowering the supporting point to uke's posture; this is a kata example, not a template every clip must copy.
What to watch in the clips
- Read whether the clip is the main technique or Sode.
- Follow the lifting hand action and the hip’s entry timing.
- Compare the short clip’s sleeve use with the main lesson’s grips.
A distinction worth noticing
O Goshi wraps the back from under the armpit; this technique emphasizes the lifting draw onto the hip. The final passage over a hip alone does not identify the name.
The sode-tsurikomi-goshi clip is a related technique included by the CSV, not a renamed tsurikomi-goshi. Both use tsurikomi and the hip, but sode-tsurikomi-goshi explicitly uses sleeve control. Identify the grips before discussing the shared principle.
Taking the lesson back to practice
Have an instructor check grips and entry distance before increasing speed. If the arms lift while the hip enters late, separate and reconnect the timing rather than pull harder on the partner’s shoulder.
The Level here refers to the IMAC Dojo curriculum. Use the article and clips to prepare questions and review them with your instructor. Practical training needs a suitable partner, space and controlled conditions.
For each clip, list what each hand holds, then examine the hip receiving uke. This reveals similarities and differences without implying that grips are interchangeable at will. Your instructor should check distance and arm alignment in practice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why include Sode in a Tsurikomi Goshi article?
The clip collection matches it here. Every clip is retained and labelled as a related technique without changing its actual identity.
What does sode mean?
Sleeve, a defining part of the lifting-drawing grip in 袖釣込腰.
What should I compare between the clips?
Compare grip and lifting draw, then how each connects the partner to the hip, keeping the names distinct.
