Short Answer

Yoko Otoshi is a side-sacrifice throw. Imbalance precedes descent; dropping weight and jerking an arm is not the principle.

Key Takeaways

  • Read direction before descent.
  • Compare the sliding leg with the partner’s base.
  • Follow hand guidance through landing.

Watch from standing through the hand guidance into the sideways descent.

What the name tells us

横落, yoko-otoshi, is a side-sacrifice technique. Yoko means side; otoshi suggests a drop.

How the technique works

The action connects sideways imbalance with sacrificing the body. The sliding leg helps establish alignment, not a strike to the knee.

Yoko-otoshi combines uke's sideways imbalance with tori's descent. Kodokan describes sliding a leg outside uke's foot, descending sideways and drawing uke down. It is not simply sitting beside a partner and pulling an arm.

What to watch in the clips

  • Read direction before descent.
  • Compare the sliding leg with the partner’s base.
  • Follow hand guidance through landing.

A distinction worth noticing

Yoko Wakare and Uki Waza also involve side sacrifice. A sideways final pose is insufficient: compare entry and the partner’s path.

Tani-otoshi takes uke backwards; uki-waza emphasizes a forward corner. All can finish with tori on the side, so identify uke's direction before the descent rather than the final lying pose.

Taking the lesson back to practice

A common error is descending while the partner remains stable. Let an instructor establish timing and receiving skills; do not replace imbalance with a sharp pull.

The Level here refers to the IMAC Dojo curriculum. Use the article and clips to prepare questions and review them with your instructor. Practical training needs a suitable partner, space and controlled conditions.

Follow the hand connection through the finish and ask how space opens beside uke. Do not insert a leg or drop weight onto the partner's leg to copy the image. The descent must relate to a receivable throwing path.
