Descending and horizontal elbows — distinguish the paths across 9 clips

A descending elbow and a horizontal elbow differ in more than name. Separate direction, lead/rear arms and the purposes of demonstration, practice and defence to study nine clips in order.

Short Answer

The DPE manual describes the descending elbow with a downward path and shoulder, waist and foot contribution. The horizontal elbow travels parallel to the floor with trunk rotation. This article combines the two groups for comparison while distinguishing lead/rear arms and defence lessons.

Key Takeaways

  • Separate the descending path from the horizontal path.
  • Read the base and trunk rotation, not only the elbow tip.
  • Lead/rear in the demonstration refers to the arm's side in the stance, not a backwards strike.
  • Demonstration, practice and defence answer different questions.

Several elbow clips can look similar because the arm folds and the elbow moves. Learning becomes clearer by first separating its path, the arm used and whether the lesson demonstrates a strike or a defence.

Printed pages 118–121 of Muaythai Palasueksa Style explain descending and horizontal elbows separately. This article applies that framework to nine Muaythai Anywhere clips. Rising and forward-thrusting elbows belong to another article.

In this article

Elbow direction is the first distinction

The manual describes a downward elbow with shoulder, waist and foot contribution, while the horizontal elbow runs parallel to the floor. Both involve the trunk, but their elbow paths differ; they should not be reduced to turning and using an elbow.

Track the elbow relative to the shoulder line and floor rather than following the hand near the head. If an oblique camera changes the apparent direction, compare another view before identifying a different elbow type.

The elbow does not begin at the forearm alone

The source connects shoulder and waist rotation with force from the feet. Read the sequence from base to trunk to elbow, rather than trying to swing the arm faster to match a finishing picture.

Ask how the feet change from start to finish, which way the trunk turns and how the hand returns to protection after the elbow passes. Separate positioning from force on equipment with an instructor instead of measuring understanding by impact on a partner.

Lead and rear do not mean forward and backward

The reviewed rear-elbow demonstration displays the English title Rear Elbow Strike. Sampled frames show the rear arm of the stance used with trunk rotation. Rear should not be translated as thrusting the elbow backwards, a separate action described in the manual.

Begin lead/rear comparisons from the stance before movement. Identify the arms, then follow each one's relationship to the feet. Fixed left/right labels are insufficient if the demonstrator switches stance or the camera changes sides.

Start with demonstrations, then use practice clips

The descending-elbow group contains lead and rear demonstrations and practice clips for both sides. The supplied horizontal-elbow group contains a lead demonstration, rear demonstration and rear practice. Establish path with a demonstration, then use the available practice clip for that side.

The sampled rear descending-elbow demonstration uses three simultaneous views. Around 15 seconds, they help compare trunk rotation with elbow direction. This observation refers specifically to that clip, not every clip in the collection.

Separate defence lessons from striking lessons

The collection has separate descending-elbow and horizontal-elbow defence clips. Their titles identify a different task from delivering the weapon. Establish attacker and receiver before following positions; do not explain a defensive guard as the striking action.

Before partnered defence practice, ask an instructor to explain distance and the drill's limits. There is no reason to increase speed or let an elbow land to prove a defence. The task here is to separate roles and positions from visible evidence.

Mistakes worth revisiting

First, do not substitute one elbow name for another without checking the path. Other mistakes include focusing on the elbow while missing the feet, treating rotation as an isolated shoulder movement, and misreading rear as a backward thrust.

Choose one question at a time: downward or horizontal, lead or rear, demonstration or defence. Explain the observation to an instructor. Keep hidden positions as questions instead of supplying steps the clip has not established.

Frequently Asked Questions

What distinguishes descending and horizontal elbows?

The manual separates a downward path from one parallel to the floor. Both use trunk rotation, but their elbow paths need separate reading.

Does rear elbow mean striking backwards?

The sampled demonstration is titled Rear Elbow Strike and shows the rear arm of the stance. Do not confuse it with a backward elbow thrust.

Why retain demonstration and practice clips?

Their titles identify different purposes. Use a demonstration to establish path and side, then its practice lesson for review. Repeated technique names alone do not justify deleting clips.

Is there a lead horizontal-elbow practice clip?

The nine clips assigned here include a lead horizontal-elbow demonstration but no clip titled lead horizontal-elbow practice. No such clip is invented or claimed.

When should I watch defence clips?

After identifying the elbow types, read attacker, receiver and positions for the defence task. Let an instructor define partnered practice before attempting it.
